Emily Mary Elwer, 93, of Delphos, passed away on May 20, 2017, at Sarah Jane Living Center.She was born August 25, 1923, in Fort Jennings, to Sylvester and Angeline(Brinkman) Hellman. On May 22, 1946, she was united in marriage to Hubert Elwer. He preceded her in death. She is survived by 4 children; Ralph (Tina) Elwer of MN, LaDonna Elwer of PA, David (Kristin) Elwer of Lima, and Charles (Carrie) Elwer of Delphos, 7 grandchildren; Eric (Susan) Elwer, Andrew (Paula) Elwer, Angela (Jordan) Eldridge, Brian (Jenny) Elwer, Natalie (Zachary) Curth, Matthew (Lynn) Elwer, and Travis (Karmen) Elwer, 9 great grandchildren, 3 sisters; Genevieve (Vincent) Karhoff, Catherine (late Meletus) Warnecke, Eileen (Louis) Schimmoeller, 1 brother; George (Carol) Hellman, and many nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her Infant daughter JoAnn; daughter-in-law, Lucia Becker Elwer; sister, Dolores (Joseph) Ruhe ; 3 brothers, William (Rosemarie) Hellman and infant twins John and Joseph Hellman. Emily shared her life as a devoted and caring wife and mother on the family farm in Fort Jennings. Upon retirement the family moved to Delphos. Over the years she spent countless hours giving and helping, not only to her family, but to many others through volunteering with her Church and community. In 1993 she was recognized for her contributions by being named the Tri-County Woman of the Year. She was an active member of the C L of C and St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church. She was also a member of the Delphos Senior Citizens and the Eagles. She enjoyed the traditional life of a homemaker, including cooking, sewing and gardening, but she also liked to travel and square dance. She was especially fond of her work volunteering at the Thrift Shop. Emily was loved by her family and friends and will be truly missed. The family is very grateful to the staff at Vancrest and Sarah Jane for giving her such good care in her twilight years. In Lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be made to the Interfaith Thrift Shop. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church on Wednesday, May 24, 2017, at 10:30 a.m., with Father George presiding. Burial will follow in Resurrection Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, May 23, 2017, from 4-8 p.m. at Harter and Schier Funeral Home, Delphos, Ohio.
