Bernice Porter Obituary

Bernice T. “Nootsie” “Toots” Mesker Porter, 84, of Delphos, passed away peacefully at St. Rita’s Hospice surrounded by family on Tuesday, May 29, 2018.  She was born September 25, 1933, to Frank (Doc) Mesker and Dorothy (Ruen) Mesker.  Both preceded her in death.  On October 29, 1959, she married David W. Porter who preceded her in death on January 19, 2000.  She was also preceded in death by an infant son, John Porter.

Bernice is survived by a stepson, David (Debbie) Porter of Rochester, IL, and Punta Gorda, FL; two grandchildren, Jessica (Chris) Dunbar of Sedalia, CO, and Justin (Sara) Porter of Bloomington, IL; four great-grandchildren, Julia, Rachel, Harrison, and Graham.   Bernice was one of thirteen children.  She is survived by  two sisters, Irene (Ernie) Barnes of Winter Haven, FL, and Beverly (John) Jameson of Delphos, OH; three brothers, Don (Jeanette) Mesker of Arthur, OH, Ken (Donna) Mesker of Mars Hill,NC, and Tony (Margee) Mesker of Delphos; many nieces and nephews with special attention to Ken, Thad, and Lindsay Jameson, Tina (Jeremy) LaRue, and a great nephew, Liam LaRue whom she had very close personal relationships with.

She was preceded in death by three sisters, Mary (Paul) Winhover, Vicki Mesker, and Linda Mesker; and three brothers, Richard, Frank, Dale and Larry “Buck” Mesker.

Bernice was a member of S. John the Evangelist Catholic Church and a lifetime member of Ottoville VFW Aux.  In her lifetime she worked for the Rustic Café, Ottoville VFW, and Van Crest Nursing Home.  She loved going to Arby’s, Dollar General, and to family dinners.  She was the life of every party.  She knew no strangers and had a smile for everyone.  Every person she ever met was a friend and she never forgot a name.

Family would like to thank the office and staff of Dr. Hux, Delphos EMS, St. Rita’s Medical Center, and St. Rita’s Hospice Team, and VanCrest Assisted Living Staff.

There will be no viewing or visitation but rather a celebration of her life with family at a later date.

Memorial contributions may be made to Delphos Visiting Nurses.
