Hubert W. Truman, 96, of Delphos, passed away on Saturday, February 24, 2018, at St. Rita’s Medical Center surrounded by his loving family. He was born on Dec. 21, 1921, in Athens, Alabama to Lyman and Leila (Zehner) Truman, both are deceased. On June 26, 1943, he was united in marriage to Marjorie Wollet. They were married 71 years when Marjorie passed in 2014.
He is survived by four daughters, Sandra (Maurice) Miller of Delphos, Nancy (Jerry) Mericle of Delphos, Pamela (James) Raabe of Bluffton and Carol (Roy) Cross of Delphos; one son, William (Roseann “Cook”) Truman of Delphos; 11 grandchildren; 25 great grandchildren; and 4 great-great grandchildren. Hubert is preceded in death by a great granddaughter, Lana Salazar; 2 brothers, Leon and James Truman; and a sister, Clara Lou Courtad.
He served in the Army from 1942-1947 as an Army airborne engineer with the 874th & 875th in the Pacific Theater (New Guinea and the Philippines). Hubert was a life-time member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church along with being a life-time member of the VFW. He retired from Lima Locomotive/Clark Equipment in Lima. His favorite pastimes included gardening (especially tomatoes), doing handyman jobs for many people in town, watching football, visiting with family and friends and mowing his large yard.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, March 2, 2018, at 11:00 a.m. at Harter and Schier Funeral Home with viewing one hour prior. Pastor Rich Rakay and Pastor Rick Lamb will officiate. Full military burial rites will be given by the Delphos Veterans Council. Burial will follow at Walnut Grove Cemetery. Friends may call from 2-8 p.m. on Thursday, March 1, 2018, at the funeral home. Memorial donations may be directed to the Trinity United Methodist Church to help pay on the Family Life Center or Disabled American Veterans.
