Lester E. Shafer, 80, of Delphos, passed away on Tuesday, December 25, 2018, at St. Rita’s Medical Center in Lima. He was born November 13, 1938, in Cincinnati, Ohio, to Chester E. and Anna Kathrine “Katie” (Johnson) Shafer. They both preceded him in death. He was united in marriage to Barbara Thompson on May 30, 1965, she survives in Delphos.
He is survived by a son, Christopher (Amy) Kettler of Columbus; three daughters, Michelle (Matt) Norton of Cleveland, Kathryn (David) Tussing of Columbus Grove, and Leslie (Jerry) Hagan of Columbus; a brother, John (Candie) Shafer of Delphos; a sister, Joan Baker of MN; eight grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
He was a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church, Eagles #471, VFW #3035, and he was a member of the Allen County Master Gardener’s where he helped beautify the Delphos Downtown Garden and the Children’s Garden in Lima. He had worked as a wholesale rep for heating and air conditioning for R.A. McGovern for over 30 years. Lester served in the Air force as a translator on planes, where he was fluent in Japanese and Russian. He also enjoyed golf, and loved spending time with his family and friends.
Funeral services will be on Saturday, December 29, 2018, at 11:00 a.m. with visitation one hour prior to the service at Harter and Schier Funeral Home with Military grave rites conducted by the Delphos Veterans Council. Burial will follow in Ridge Cemetery. Friends may call on Friday, December 28, 2018, from 3:00-7:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Delphos Veterans Council.
