Vera Chiles

Vera L. Chiles, 92, of Delphos, passed away on July 11, 2019, at Vancrest Healthcare Center of Delphos.

She was born December 1, 1926, in Lima to Frederick and Lula (Roberts) Roeder. She was united in marriage to Harvey M. Chiles on July 31, 1946; he preceded her in death on January 5, 2010.

She is survived by a son, Dr. Harvey M. (Linda) Chiles III of Edwardsville; a daughter, Anita (James) Dunlap of Delphos; four grandchildren, Kim (Eric) Riddell-Furry, Bryan (Corrie) Dunlap, Robert (Daniel) Chiles-Goodwin, and Autumn (Mike) Parker; seven great-grandchildren, Alex Theobald, Emmalee Riddell, Jenna Dunlap, Ethan Dunlap, and Zoe, Clayton, and Cade Parker. 

She was preceded in death by four sisters, Catheryn Carroll, Lucille Conway, Helen Stager, and Lillian Niles; and two brothers, Emmett “Pete” and Ralph Roeder.

Vera was a member of the First United Presbyterian Church in Delphos where she was very active and held many offices. She had worked for Allen County Board of Education for eight years and then for Delphos City Schools as a secretary for 22 years. Vera loved animals and was a member of the Humane Society, where she also volunteered for many years.  She also volunteered for over 2000 hours at Lima Memorial Hospital.

Funeral Services will be on Monday, July 15, 2019, at 11:00 a.m. at Harter and Schier Funeral Home. Rev. Harry Tolhurst will officiate.  Burial will follow in Bluelick Cemetery.   Visitation will be on Sunday, July 14, from 3:00-7-00 at the funeral home and an hour before the service.  Memorial contributions may be made to The Putnam County Hospice or Allen County Humane Society.
